Buy the same amount every month

Savings Plan Simulator

See what a monthly purchase of a volatile asset does over years, under a return you choose, with fees, and with a pessimistic and an optimistic path beside the expected one.

What this tool does

A savings plan, or dollar-cost averaging, buys a fixed amount at a fixed interval regardless of price. This simulator compounds a monthly amount at an annual return you set, subtracts a purchase fee, and draws two more paths at plus and minus one standard deviation of the volatility you choose, so that the range is visible and not just the average. It is arithmetic, not a forecast: the future return of any asset is unknown.

How to use it

  • Set the monthly amount, the number of years and, if you like, a starting lump sum.
  • Choose an expected annual return and a volatility. The presets show what different asset classes have done historically, which is no guarantee.
  • Read invested versus final value, the multiple, and the pessimistic and optimistic paths on the chart.

Good to know

  • Historical returns of bitcoin and technology stocks include drawdowns of more than seventy percent. The pessimistic path is not a floor.
  • Fees compound too: a one percent purchase fee costs more than one percent of the final value over long horizons.
  • Taxes depend on your country and are not included.
