Ledger Atom: the hardware wallet maker builds a device for everyday apps

Ledger has unveiled Ledger Atom, a security and privacy device that runs everyday apps on top of a secure chip and its own operating system. Reservations are open at 849 dollars, delivery is planned for 2027.
For twelve years Ledger has built small devices that keep the private keys of cryptocurrencies away from the internet. On 15 October 2026, at its Ledger Op3n event in Paris, the company presented something larger: Ledger Atom, which it describes as a security and privacy device that runs everyday apps. Chairman and chief executive Pascal Gauthier calls the launch a change of category, from securing crypto to a platform that protects a person's entire digital life.
A phone, but not quite
Customers have asked Ledger for a phone for years, the company says. Atom is its answer, and it is deliberately presented as something new rather than another phone. The device runs ordinary apps and has 5G built in, but underneath sit the parts that define every Ledger: a secure chip, a secure screen and the operating system Ledger OS, built to keep secrets. Whenever the user interacts with private keys, the device switches to a Secure Mode. A hardware switch cuts camera and microphone at the source, and the final approval for sensitive actions comes from the user in person, which Ledger calls Proof of You.

What runs on it
Ledger Wallet, the company's crypto app, is native on Atom, so buying, selling, swapping and earning yield need neither a cable nor a second device. Passkeys sit isolated in the secure chip, and every login is approved on a screen that only Ledger OS controls. Messages get the same treatment: their keys stay in the secure chip, and a secure message dropped into any app on the device can only be read by the intended recipient on another Atom. Backup and recovery rely on Ledger Recover and the Ledger Recovery Key.
Partners were announced alongside. Payward, the parent company of the Kraken exchange, wants to explore letting Atom users sign sensitive exchange transactions on the secure screen. The Seeker app from Solana Mobile comes preinstalled and opens the more than 1,500 apps of the Solana dApp Store. Persona is the first identity partner, so that users can prove their age or identity without revealing more than needed. Cyber50 Defense is exploring how the device can strengthen secure communications.

Agents propose, humans approve
The second theme of the launch is artificial intelligence. With Ledger Agent Intent, every request an AI agent makes for the owner's approval lands in one place, so the agents keep working and the owner approves when ready. Ledger's formula is "agents propose, humans approve, hardware enforces". The function works on every compatible Ledger signer and, by the company's account, at its best on Atom. Ledger also describes the device as ready for post-quantum cryptography. Why holding your own keys matters in the first place is the subject of our long read on custody and self-custody.
Price and timing
A Founders Edition can be reserved with a fully refundable deposit of 100 dollars, at a special reserve price of 849 dollars. Ledger says Atom ships in 2027 and gives the second quarter as an estimate, explicitly not a commitment. The device is still in development: specifications, features, design and price may change before launch, and app availability depends on certifications and licences. Ledger puts its installed base at more than eight million devices sold in 165 countries.
Whether a second, security-first device finds a place next to the smartphone is the real test. Ledger is betting that AI agents and quantum computing will make that question pressing for far more people than today's crypto owners.

Custody
Not your keys, and the other half of that sentence
Self-custody removes the risk that a company loses your coins and replaces it with the risk that you do. Choosing between them is the most consequential decision anyone in this market makes.

Europe wrote the rulebook first
Since the end of 2024, offering crypto services in the European Union requires a licence. The result is fewer providers, better protections and a set of rules the rest of the world is now copying.

The quiet giants
The largest product crypto ever built is not an investment. It is a dollar that moves like a message, it settles trillions a year, and in 2025 it finally got a rulebook.
